Cold week in February

Winter Quarters Temple

FEBRUARY 12TH THROUGH 18TH

Kanesville Tabernacle
It has been a week of work and learning. We have been working at the Trail Center and Tabernacle this week, pretty slow on the shifts that we have been working. It is fun to work at the Trail Center and be able to talk to people about the Church.  This week we met a man who was doing research on a movie and historic site. It was interesting to talk to him  (and Elder White helped him a lot!

He is working on a historic Site  in Lexington Missouri.  The city is the site where a riverboat accident that involved Latter day Saints who were coming from England and who were traveling from New Orleans to Council Bluffs Iowa.  They started on the journey up the Missouri.  The river was running high and the ice was floating on the river. When the boat reached Lexington Missouri is was docked and had tried to make the passage up the river, but the current was swift and the ice made them to go back to Lexington.  The Captain tried again and he put so much steam on the boiler that the boat blew up, killing a number of Saints and injuring others. The boat was carrying about  an estimated 150 members. 75 were killed and the rest were badly wounded. The people of Lexington cared for the saints and helped nurse them back to  health.  It is said that the orphaned children were given to families in the area according to the legend of the area.  The church record does not say anything about the children. The interesting part of the story was that the people 20 years earlier were going to kill all the Mormons

We had dinner with the Mission President and his wife on Sunday. President Gardner talked about a group of people from Burma. They are refugees and the missionaries are having great success in the area. He wants a Senior Couple to work in the ward as they do in the inter city wards in Salt Lake,  Is there a special reason he was telling us?  They have Sacrament Meeting and Primary and Sunday School. The young children speak enough English to meet in the regular Young men and Young women. Sister Gardner told us she was looking at our faces to see the response we gave.

We continue to serve in the Temple learning the things we need to know to do the work.  We are looking forward to doing whatever the Lord wants us to do.
