Another great General Conference with great topics and new programs. We look forward to next year with the Celebration of the first vision. Conference talks are all scripture for us  .
President Wilford Woodruff told this story in General Conference. ,  "Brother Joseph turned to Brother Brigham Young and said, “Brother Brigham I want you to take the stand and tell us your views with regard to the written oracles and the written word of God.” Brother Brigham took the stand, and he took the Bible, and laid it down; he took the Book of Mormon, and laid it down; and he took the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, and laid it down before him, and he said: “There is the written word of God to us, concerning the work of God from the beginning of the world, almost, to our day.” “And now,” said he, “when compared with the living oracles those books are nothing to me; those books do not convey the word of God to direct to us now, as do the words of a Prophet or a man bearing the Holy Priesthood in our day and generation. I would rather have the living oracles than all the writing in the books.” That was the course he pursued. When he was through, Brother Joseph said to the congregation: “Brother Brigham has told you the word of the Lord, and he has told you the truth.” (Conference Report, October 1897, p.22)

This week we had the opportunity to go to Elkhorn, Iowa. This is a community in western Iowa where Danish people settled. As part of their Danish roots they bought a Windmill in Denmark and shipped it to Elkhorn and assembled it. This is an actual mill used to grind wheat, corn, and rye.  While there we visited the Danish American Museum. Elkhorn is where many of the Danish people settled.

Elk Horn was established in 1901, and incorporated as a town in 1910.  The city took its name from Elkhorn Creek.

Danish Windmill

The Danish Windmill is an authentic windmill imported from Denmark. The windmill was built in Denmark 1848 and reassembled in Elk Horn in 1976. We learned more about how it was brought to The Danish Villages and how windmills work by touring this special addition to our communities. Our mill also boasts the largest Danish import gift shop in the United States.

The Little Mermaid

In 1974, the Progressive Danes of Kimballton bought a mermaid statue sculpted in cold cast bronze by two college students in Modesto, CA. This statue is a replica of the famous Little Mermaid that stands in the Copenhagen harbor and honors the famous storyteller Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale "The Little Mermaid". For twenty years, The Little Mermaid statue sat on her rock. As she started to deteriorate, new funds were solicited to have her recast in bronze. In 2008, the statue and the Hans Christian Andersen Park were rededicated during Kimballton's Quasquicentennial Celebration. The Little Mermaid Park also includes the Audubon County Freedom Rock.. In the park are little statues around the park of a lot of Anderson"s stories: Princess and the Pea, Emperor 's New Clothes, Ugly Duckling...

 Museum of Danish America

The Museum of Danish America takes you on a journey following the path that many immigrants took to the United States from Denmark. We explored the rich heritage of Danish Americans and enjoyed their immigration story. It was interesting that the Museum showed a timeline of the History of Demark.

They were primarily Lutheran and Catholic, and they allowed Jews in the country, these were the only religions allowed In Demark.  The Lord works his wonders,  because in 1849 the country allowed freedom of religion.. One of the first religions in the country was The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Our ancestors joined the Church shortly and left with a body of Saints in 1857.

We came home from the trip and wanted to look more into our ancestors from Denmark.
