The first Account of Winter Quarter Cemetery "Wednesday Nov.11, 1846. at the meeting of the High Council held at Winter Quarters, it was voted that a new burial ground be located on the second ridge west of Winter Quarter." "There are times and places in the life of every individual, every people, and every nation when great spiritual heights are reached, ... times when valor blazes out in unwanted glory, when courage becomes a living thing, when the last great sacrifice burns out upon the altars of hope and righteousness, when faith in God stands as the granite mountain wall, firm and immovable, while hardship, want, hunger, sickness, sorrow, and death beat down to crush it. Winter Quarters, here on the western banks of the Missouri river just north of Omaha, was such a time and a place for the Mormon people,... the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as their true name is."  President Heber J Grant at Dedications of the Wi...

The Big Muddy Sept 9th through 15th

We have seen the Missouri River almost every day since we arrived, we have seen it with ice chunks, when it was really low and this year as it has flooded many people in the Nebraska area.  We have been down to the shore and even walked many times across the bridge that spans the river from the City of Omaha to the Council Bluff Iowa.  Finally we were able to take a One hour cruise on the River with our friends Elder and Sister Holt.  The trip left the dock and cruised up the river about 2 miles, the River boat would reach a top speed of 3 miles an hour. We passed Freedom Park on the shore,  and continued to the swivel train tressell. Turning down river at a float speed of ten miles per hour we went to the Lewis and Clark landing and to the pedestrian bridge, there turning again up the River at 3 miles an hour. The Missouri river is as fast or faster than the Colorado River. Here is so...

Kanesville Tabernacle

Image
Sept 2nd -8th We serve in such a beautiful area and such a historic area of the Church We thought we should tell the story of the Kanesville Tabernacle and the Reorganizing the First Presidency. The settlement was Miller’s Hollow, Iowa, across the river from Winter Quarters. The Saints would soon call the town Kanesville in honor of Thomas L. Kane, a non–Latter-day Saint who was a friend to the Church. The Apostles tried to hold a conference there on December 3 and 4, but they were “dreadfully crowded” in the small building where they met Reorganizing the First Presidency: Revelation to the Apostles, the Apostles set their sights on building up the kingdom of God throughout the earth. On December 5, they met in the cabin of Elder Orson Hyde, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve. Their discussions included an issue they had considered for some time: reorganizing the First Presidency. They had especially struggled with this subject over the three previous weeks. They...

For the Beauty of the Earth

Image
May I make this crystal clear: Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and Savior, created all things under the direction of his Father, including life, and he did so according to a preconceived plan. He was the Creator of heaven and earth.". Elder Mark E. Peterson This blog shows the beauty of the creation, in particular the beauty that surrounds the Mormon Trail Center, Winter Quarters Temple and the Kanesville Tabernacle. Over the year the Facilities Management keep the grounds and flower beds in such great shape to show the beauty of His creation. Alma 30:44 reads ...all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.
